The Good and The Evil Gargoyle Porcelain SculptureQuestion about this product? Click here to chat with us.
Monumental sculptures carved in monolithic cubes of limestone, each weighing 30 tons, the 8 gargoyles are distributed by the façades of the building into two groups of four, defining, in their complementing elements, the characteristics of the documents stored in the Torre do Tombo.
“The Perpetrators of History” are placed on the façades’ centre, facing each other. They indicate the opposites and the dichotomies present in the historical development, and they are represented by the Gargoyles: The Good and the Evil, The Old, the Young and Death, War and Peace and Tragedy and Comedy.

Founded in 1824, the Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory was the first industrial unit dedicated to producing porcelain in Portugal. The persistence of its founder, José Ferreira Pinto Basto, was instrumental to the launch and success of this daring enterprise. A landowner, audacious merchant and distinguished figure in Portuguese society at the time, José Ferreira Pinto Basto wisely adopted the liberal ideas of the 19th century, having become “the first example of free initiative” in Portugal.
